Help — How to export your CSV

Clear-Return requires a CSV transaction history from your exchange or wallet. Follow the guide for your exchange below, then upload the file on your dashboard to generate your HMRC-ready tax summary.

Quick overview

  1. Export your transaction history as a CSV from your exchange (guides below).
  2. Go to your dashboard, select your exchange, and upload the CSV.
  3. Choose your tax year and preferred report format.
  4. Click Generate report and download your summary.

Not sure if your CSV columns are correct? Download the template for your exchange from the dashboard to see the exact headers that are expected.

Binance

  1. Log in to your Binance account at binance.com.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, then select "Orders & Trades".
  3. Choose "Trade History" from the sub-menu.
  4. Select the date range you need (up to 3 months at a time — repeat for multiple periods if required).
  5. Click "Export" and choose "Export Trade History".
  6. Wait for Binance to prepare the file, then download the CSV from the notification or the "Export Centre" (Profile → Export Centre).
  7. Upload the downloaded CSV to your Clear-Return dashboard.

Note: Binance limits exports to 3-month windows. If your tax year spans more than 3 months, export in chunks and combine the rows into a single CSV before uploading.

Coinbase

  1. Log in to your Coinbase account at coinbase.com.
  2. Go to "Profile & Settings" (click your avatar, top-right).
  3. Select the "Privacy" tab, then click "Download your data" under "Request data export".
  4. Alternatively, navigate directly to coinbase.com/reports.
  5. Under "Transaction history", choose the account and date range.
  6. Click "Generate report" — Coinbase will email you a download link.
  7. Download the CSV from the email or the Reports page, then upload it to your Clear-Return dashboard.

Note: Coinbase may take a few minutes to generate the report. Check your inbox for the download link.

Kraken

  1. Log in to your Kraken account at kraken.com.
  2. In the top navigation, click "History", then select "Export".
  3. Choose "Trades" as the export type.
  4. Set the date range to cover the full tax year (6 April to 5 April for UK).
  5. Click "Submit" to queue the export.
  6. Once ready, download the CSV from the same "Export" page.
  7. Upload the downloaded CSV to your Clear-Return dashboard.

Bitstamp

  1. Log in to your Bitstamp account at bitstamp.net.
  2. Click your username in the top-right corner and go to "Activity".
  3. Select "Transaction history" from the left-hand menu.
  4. Use the date filters to select the full tax year.
  5. Click "Export" (the download icon) and choose "CSV".
  6. Download the file and upload it to your Clear-Return dashboard.

Crypto Wallet (manual / on-chain)

  1. Export your on-chain transaction history as a CSV from your portfolio tracker or blockchain explorer.
  2. Ensure the CSV includes at minimum: timestamp, asset, type, amount, price, fee, fee_asset, tx_hash, direction, and address columns.
  3. Download the wallet CSV template from the dashboard to see the exact column headers required.
  4. If your export uses different column names, rename them to match the template before uploading.
  5. Upload the prepared CSV to your Clear-Return dashboard.

Note: Most hardware and software wallets do not export CSVs directly. You will need to export from a portfolio tracker or blockchain explorer that supports CSV download.

Common issues

“Missing expected headers” warning

This means the CSV you uploaded does not contain all the required column headers for the exchange you selected. Double-check that you have selected the correct exchange in the dashboard dropdown, and that you exported the right type of report (trade history, not deposit/withdrawal history). You can download the CSV template from the dashboard to see exactly which column headers are required.

“Transaction limit exceeded” error

Your current plan supports a maximum number of transactions. If your CSV contains more rows than your plan allows, you will need to upgrade your plan before generating a report.

File type not recognised

Make sure the file you are uploading has a .csv extension. Some exchanges export files as .xlsx (Excel) — open the file in Excel or Google Sheets and use File → Save As → CSV to convert it first.
